Getting the Most out of Your Foam and Wool Pads
There are a lot of different opinions and information on the types of pads used in boat detailing. Whether you prefer foam or wool, or use both, you want to get the most out of your accessories.
We created three simple tips that will allow you to get the best performance and provide the longest life for your foam and wool boat detailing pads.
- Correctly use your pads – Only use one foam or wool pad per detailing product
- Properly store your pads – Store your foam and wool boat detailing pads in a gallon zip bag. Write the name or the product used with the pad on the bag (with a sharpie).
- Care for your pads – wool pads and foam pads can be hand washed, wrung and air dried to ensure that the Velcro® does not delaminate from excessive washing or heat from a drier.
Boat Wax and Cleaner Wax
Boat wax, cleaner wax, boat polisher…there are a lot of different approaches to boat hull maintenance and a lot of questions about what products do what.
At Hula Boat Care Products we have developed a one-step boat wax designed to restore gloss while leaving the surface protected with a wax polymer blend. This cleaner wax is designed to remove mild oxidation, blemishes and scuffs with ease – just like a polish.
The difference with Hang Ten Cleaner Wax is the surface is polished to a beautiful, high gloss finish and with a water repellent UV barrier.
It is important to use a boat cleaner wax instead of just applying wax over old wax. When you use a boat wax that is actually a cleaner wax you can actually remove oxidation and leave a prepared surface that will provide a higher gloss finish and lasting results.
Versatility is the key with this product as it can be applied by hand or polishing machine to provide the results you are looking for.
Be advised that fibreglass or gelcoat is very tough material. You must be very intentional with your polishing. We often use a circular polisher including the Makita 9227C.
For a complete boat wax treatment it’s a three, or more, step process and there are no shortcuts:
Step 1: Wash thoroughly and stay away from aggressive household cleaners like dawn.
Step 2: Prep and Polish. Use a machine, preferably a circular, but we have had success with random orbitals like a Cyclo Polisher, but it takes a lot more work. For heavy oxidation and scratches use Riptide Liquid Compound. For light oxidation start with Hang Ten Cleaner Wax.
Step 3: Seal. I use an acrylic sealer like Big Kahuna Polymer Sealant. Put on alt least two coats because you always miss some areas on the first application.

Vinyl Cleaner and Vinyl Conditioner Winter Tips
If you are trying to protect your boat’s vinyl from drying and cracking this winter then consider the regular use of a vinyl conditioner like Wipe Out Vinyl Cleaner & Conditioner. The gentle cleaners are designed for marine grade vinyl and will remove any ground in dirt and grime from cushions, seat backs and headrest.
What makes Wipe Out Vinyl Cleaner and Conditioner so popular is after cleaning the vinyl, while leaving a moisturizing coat of conditioner that will keep the vinyl soft and supple during the cold months.
Having a clean and conditioned vinyl surface will also help slow down the growth of any mold and mildew so spring clean up will be a breeze.
Should I Use A Vinyl Cleaner and Condition?
We have received a lot of questions about what is the right way to use a vinyl cleaner and whether a conditioner is required for each application. Another common question that boat and watercraft owners ask us is how to safely remove stains with a vinyl cleaner.
We always recommend that you test in an inconspicuious area first. We also do not recommend using abrasive scrubbing tools, brushes and scrubbing sponges.Overly aggressive application tools can scratch the vinyl surface and permanently damage it. Apply Wipe Out Vinyl Cleaner and Conditioner then allow it to dwell. Wipe with a towel. You can reapply the vinyl clean and allow to dwell. Then use a soft brush and wipe with a towel.
It is important that you use a vinyl conditioner after you use a vinyl cleaner. Leaving vinyl, and especially marine grade vinyl found in most boats and watercraft, unconditioned will damage the vinyl surface and lead to cracking and splitting. Whether you are cleaning your Centurion, Tige, MasterCraft or Malibu boat you will want to clean and protect your vinyl.
